Hey guys, I am having a very difficult time deciding on weather I should purchase the Red One MX or Scarlet X. I am looking forward to buying these towards the beginning of this summer, so I don't know how prices will compare exactly, but these cameras seem so similar. What are your guys' opinions? What would you go with? (I know summer is pretty far away but I'm really freaking out about this for some reason. I don't care much about prices, now, which would be a better filmmaking camera overall? (Mostly for Independent/Short Films). Which would have a longer lasting future? I really don't care about size or weight either. Thanks Guys!

Key points to consider:
Lens mount: - RED ONE is PL cine mount with dumb Nikon mount available (the path to Canon mount leads through dangerous woods...) - SCARLET can do both PL cine mount or Smart Canon mount (with dumb Nikon of course) - so basically it depends on the glass you are planning to use / or you own... Speed: - RED ONE can do 120 FPS at 2K and 60 FPS at 3K - SCARLET can do 120 FPS at 1K and 60 FPS at 2K Size: - RED ONE is a "monster" - a very large and heavy camera to lug around... - SCARLET is tiny in comparison to RED ONE (about 1/3) Resolution: - RED ONE peaks at 4.5K in wide mode, 4K in 16:9 - SCARLET can do 5K, albeit at only 12 FPS HDRx: - RED ONE no can do... - SCARLET can - but halves the FPS Accessories: - You can get cheap used accessories for RED ONE at great prices everywhere - SCARLET's accessories are mostly on backorder (but should be out by end of March) Price: - used RED ONE with all basic accessories ready to shoot (save for lens) can be had for under $10K - SCARLET is a bit more - about $15K for ready-to-shoot Hope this helps... I've already bought the Scarlet-X (Ti Canon Mount). For now I am renting Epic and intend to rent it when I need high speed shooting to complement my Scarlet. But with the sub-10K range the RED ONE's are becoming an interesting option for 120 FPS shots. Having said that - I have been shooting on the RED ONE's pretty much since the get go, and one thing I do not miss is lugging these beast around. That is the only factor keeping me from buying one... (for now). I know I will eventually save up for my own Epic, but it would be nice to have a RED ONE sitting on the shelf 50 years from now... (if you catch my drift...)

You know, I was looking at my Scarlet today and ran the numbers... for what I paid for the Scarlet setup, I could get 2 RED One setups right now.
Same sensor, faster fps. But bigger and no HDRX or upgrades to Dragon... Made me really think of selling the Scarlet setup for list prices (I could probably get more than list on much of it, but I wouldn't do that) and getting back into an R1 - then having tons of cash left over... Idunno, I really like the Scarlet. |

R1, a much better camera IMO. Anything with a 1k function is already outdated.

The Vayron does one task, and it does that whether it be 5mph or 200mph. Quote:
I'm sure your timelapses will be beautiful, but you could have done those on a much cheaper stills camera (take your pick). I don't think I'll ever see the point in the Scarlet-X. It will always be the retard brother of the Epic. |
